ABSTRACT
Natives in the steppes of South and Southwest Africa use extract of Harpagophytum procumbens for the treatment of various diseases. Various preparations from devil’s claw have been used in Europe and have become very popular in recent years in the alternative treatment of inflammatory disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Extracts of Harpagophytum procumbens have become an established traditional treatment for rheumatic complaints. There is good in vitro and in vivo pharmacological evidence of the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of Radix Harpagophyti. The clinical data on extract of Harpagophytum procumbens seem to be very promising.
