ABSTRACT
The discovery of the LE phenomenon 60 years ago was a milestone of modern clinical immunology – it was the first method for the detection of anti-dsDNA antibodies. “Positive LE preparation” was for about 30 years the first of the “immunological disorders” in the Criteria for the Classification of systemic lupus erythematosus. Nowadays this “arduous” method is generally replaced by immunofluorescence and ELISA. However, LE cells formed in vivo in effusions in cerebro-spinal fluid and in synovial fluid should still be diagnostic tools. Studies aimed at an explanation of the cell biological basis of the LE phenomenon are continued and they are important from the point of view of autoimmune diseases pathogenesis in general.
