ABSTRACT
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by wide diversity of clinical and serological features. The etiology of the disease is very complex and includes genetic, hormonal and environmental factors which contribute to immunological disorders. This article presents the role of environmental factors such as UVB exposure, infections, drugs, chemical factors, diet, socioeconomic and psychosocial factors, vitamin D insufficiency, exogenic estrogens, smoking, vaccinations and in utero environment in the etiology of SLE and SLE related diseases.
