ABSTRACT
The pain in the degenerative spine disease arises mostly in three anatomical structures: 1) facet joints, 2) annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disc, 3) the site of contact of disc hernias with nerve roots. Recognition of painful structures and appropriate choice of the therapeutic procedure are responsible for more effective control of the pain. This article presents three minimally invasive techniques of pain relief, including pathogenesis and site of pain's origin: 1) neurolysis of the facet joints, 2) electrothermal therapy of the intervertebral discs, 3) percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD). There is a gap in the treatment schedule between ineffective conservative treatment and radical surgery on the open spine, which may be filled by the minimally invasive interventional techniques.
