Pulmonary function tests and diffusing capacity in patients with systemic sclerosis

ABSTRACT
Background: Connective tissue disease effect many organs. In the respiratory system they may cause numerous symptoms as: dry cough, dyspnea and fatigue.
Aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in pulmonary functional tests in course of the systemic sclerosis.
Material and methods: Study was conducted in the group of 39 patients with systemic sclerosis. Patients were observed in the period from 2 to 44 months. In this time pulmonary functional tests and lung diffusion capacity were measured at least twice. The following indicies were evaluated: DLCOc, FVC, FEV1 and TLC.
Results: The most significant changes in the course of systemic sclerosis were observed in DLCOc. In most of studied patients this parameter was already depressed at the beginning of the study and significantly changed during the observation.
Conclusions: Repetitive measurements of DLCOc allows to evaluate the advance and progress of systemic sclerosis. The other evaluated parameters are less relevant clinically.
