Sugeruje się, że to neutrofile poprzez wydzielane przez nie oksydanty i enzymy proteolityczne są odpowiedzialne za uszkodzenia stawów, obserwowane podczas reumatoidalnego zapalenia stawów. W niniejszej pracy neutrofile, izolowane zarówno od zdrowych dawców, jak i pacjentów chorych na reumatoidalne zapalenie stawów, eksponowano na zwiększające się stężenia płynu stawowego (0-80%). Warunki te uznano za zbliżone do warunków panujących in vivo w jamie stawu kolanowego. Wykazano, że zwiększające się stężenia płynu stawowego znacząco odmiennie wpływały na badane typy chemiluminescencji: luminolo- i lucigeninozależne.
