ABSTRACT
The increased interest in the role of white adipose tissue started in 1994 with the discovery of leptin. Nowadays adipose tissue is perceived as an endocrine organ that in addition to regulation of fat mass produces a large number of bioactive mediators, called adipokines, which among other things can regulate the function of brain, liver, skeletal muscles and the immune system. In the present article we briefly summarize the current data on the role of adipokines in the pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases, particularly systemic sclerosis.
