Leptyna i adiponektyna to klasyczne adipokiny produkowane przez białą tkankę tłuszczową. Mają one działanie plejotropowe; ich rolę bada się w takich chorobach, jak reumatoidalne zapalenie stawów czy choroba zwyrodnieniowa stawów. Dotąd nie wiadomo, jaki dokładnie wpływ wywierają one na procesy chondrogenezy i osteoblastogenezy. Te dwa procesy są bardzo istotne z punktu widzenia reumatoidalnego zapalenia stawów, gdyż w chorobie tej dochodzi do destrukcji chrząstki i kości stawowej. Istotne jest określenie, jaką rolę odgrywają adipokiny w reumatoidalnym zapaleniu stawów oraz w jaki sposób wpływają na różnicowanie komórek mezenchymalnych. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono obecną wiedzę na temat roli adiponektyny i leptyny w procesach osteogenezy i chondrogenezy (tab. I i II).
